How a maximalist packer such as myself packs for ten days. Better to have than to wish you’d packed it! (at Newark Liberty International Airport)

Circa 2002 I published my first piece of fiction (a chapter excerpt from what became THE RESIDUE YEARS) in this anthology as a result of my attendance at The Hurston Wright Writers Week. Studied with Jewel Parker Rhodes. I was geeked when I saw the anthology’s line up. #residueyears #residueyearsthedoc #firstfiction

Context is everything: circa 2000 I attended a reading by Walter Mosley at Powells Bookstore. I was a first year grad student at Portland State and green as they come. After the reading, in my naïveté and ambition, I approached him and said I was moving to New York to be a writer and sure would love to be able to keep in contact with him. He said something like “great, good luck kid.” Fast forward years later to last year. I saw Mosley in the green room of the MIA Bookfest. I approached him again, and told him about my book. He said he’d look it up and check it out. I was heartened and felt a great sense of pride being a fellow author in the room. Last March I saw him again in the green room of the National Black Writers Conference, and I spoke but didn’t mention any of our previous encounters. This past Saturday I saw him at the Harlem Book Fair. He was walking by and I screamed “Hey Mr. Mosley I got that book for you. Remember Miami.” He stopped and bought a book having no idea of all my personal history with him. It was one of those moments that will stick with me a long long time. Maybe next time I see him he’ll say he got a chance to read the book. Gotta love the ambition. #residueyears (at Harlem Book Fair)
